Treating Stroke with Acupuncture

Did you know that in Canada there are over 50,000 new strokes cases every year? That’s about one stroke every 10 minutes. About 426,000 Canadians are living with the effects of a stroke, so it goes without saying that this is a huge problem in modern society, and it’s not surprising if you or a friend of yours know someone who has had a stroke.

Acupuncture Used To Treat Stroke Symptoms

When a person suffers a stroke, a number of symptoms can happen, including paralysis, speech problems, spasticity, and depression. Acupuncture is widely used in Asia to treat those symptoms, and it is often suggested as soon as just a few days after the stroke has occurred.

The Benefits of Acupuncture for Stroke Patients

There are many studies done in China and Japan that have demonstrated that acupuncture offers significant benefits in treating stroke. These studies indicate that patients get well faster, perform better in self-care, require less nursing and rehabilitation service, and use less healthcare dollars. Acupuncture is also excellent at supporting rehabilitative exercises and treatments.

A Safe Alternative for Treating Stroke

When performed by a qualified professional, acupuncture is a safe therapy, and the discomfort from needling is minimal, often quite comfortable, and even relaxing. In the initial 2-4 weeks of treatment, daily to 3 times a week treatment is highly recommended. Though the cost of acupuncture treatment adds up initially, the savings is long-term, when one is able to have a greater level of self-care and require less (or no) assistance.
