Springtime Aches and Pains: Surprisingly Simple Solutions

spring acupuncture mobile healthSpring is on its way, and you can’t wait to get outside and go jogging, play a few sets of tennis, or tee off at the local golf course.  But for many of us, outdoor activities mean having to deal with nagging, chronic pain and inflammation that can keep you indoors and potentially ruin this beautiful time of year. Because Vancouver and the Lower Mainland are still rainy, plan ahead with acupuncture treatments onsite. Once the sun arrives, you’ll be ready with these great options to help you have a healthy, happy, and pain-free spring.

Sunshine to the rescue

Overcoming chronic aches, pains and inflammation can come from a surprising champion of pain relief–the sun. Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin”, is the only vitamin that we create in our skin when it is exposed to the sunlight. Vitamin D is processed by the liver and kidneys to form an active chemical that stimulates the absorption of bone-strengthening calcium from foods. A lack of vitamin D has been associated with a number of diseases, including chronic painful conditions, such as joint pain. Spending some time outside can be a great way to boost the body’s vitamin D supply. Just remember your sunscreen and don’t overdo it!

Fresh air and pain relief

Deep breathing outside in the fresh air can help to reduce pain and relax the entire body. Simply take slow deep breaths in through the nose for 10 seconds and exhale through the mouth for a similar count to help quiet the mind and alleviate pain. You can repeat this deep breathing method 5 to 10 times, several times a day. Whether you are relaxing alone in the sunshine, or spending some quality time with friends outdoors, try to incorporate deep breathing exercises on a daily basis. Your body and your mind will thank you.

Don’t forget to replace your electrolytes

Replenishing vital minerals you lose when you perspire is important in preventing inflammation or soreness. Electrolytes– minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium– are important for healthy muscular, cardiovascular, nervous and immune systems functioning. Electrolytes can be found in a well-balanced diet that includes healthy portions of fruits and vegetables. Those of you who sweat profusely can replace your electrolytes with liquids that are fortified with potassium and sodium.
