Everywhere we look now we are bombarded by news about this new coronavirus COVID-19. While most of us in Canada will likely not be severely affected by this virus (either not catch it or catch it and experience mild to moderate symptoms from which we recover), there are those who at much higher risk: older adults and those with compromised immune systems or with serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes.
Self isolation and social distancing are terms that we probably never used before in our lives, but they are now part of our daily language. The reason for the cancellation of gatherings over 250 people and for staying at least a meter away from others in public settings is that we are trying to avoid the spreading of COVID-19 to protect our vulnerable citizens and to avoid overwhelming our medical system.
However, we still need to live. People are still struggling with pain, digestive issues, fatigue, chronic illness, and–more than ever, perhaps–stress and anxiety. We cannot ignore our health issues while we deal with the current world situation. A healthy body and mind is our best defense.
In my own practice, I have had cancellations from patients wanting to protect their immune-compromised family members. They are self-isolating in order to avoid being a vector that brings illness to their loved ones.
As a result, we are working on increasing our number of available registered acupuncturists to treat you at your home. As a registered Dr. of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I can also prescribe customized or pre-prepared Chinese herbs. Some of these are specific to helping support the immune system and others have anti-viral properties.
